ABOUT THE FOUNDER AND OWNER

Paul O'Quinn is a native of Dickenson County, Virginia.  He moved away after graduating from high school, and spent the next 35 years living outside the county.  Aside from Virginia, he has lived in Pennsylvania and Tennessee.

After high school, Paul spent a couple of years working in restaurants and a convenience store before getting a job in manufacturing.  In 1991, he completed an associate’s degree in Electronics Technology from Virginia Highlands Community College.  The degree, along with a demonstrated passion for continuous improvement, helped him land a position as a Process Engineer.

After several years in the manufacturing industry, including frontline and engineering work, Paul decided to shift his career to healthcare.  In order to make the transition, he knew he would need additional education and settled on pursuing a bachelor's degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering.  That path allowed him to take his existing experience in process improvement and pair it with a degree centered in the improvement sciences.  As a nontraditional student, Paul graduated from Virginia Tech at the age of 37 and soon embarked on a career improving the efficiency and effectiveness of workflow processes in healthcare.

After working for a few years as a Performance Improvement Consultant, Paul believed he could have more influence on meaningful change if working at a higher leadership position.  To do that, he would need additional education.   He received a master’s degree in Business Administration from Radford University.  The degree, combined with his experience, facilitated Paul’s promotion to Director of Process Improvement which then led to his next role as a Director of Patient Safety and Quality.

During Paul’s time away from Dickenson County, there was always a desire to one day return and use his skills and experience to help his community and the region.  After working several years across multiple industries, Paul resigned from his director role and returned to Dickenson County.  Once there, he spent time talking to citizens, local governments, and various support organizations to assess the needs of the area.  He also spent time volunteering with various groups including local government, nonprofit healthcare, and a grassroots organization whose mission is to help Southwest Virginia transition from a coal economy to a more sustainable economy.

It is Paul’s experience, as well as his assessment of community and regional needs, that led him establish AppSOL Solutions--a limited liability corporation that focuses on improving the standard of living in a community by offering continuous improvement and operational excellence consulting services to local governments, businesses, and support organizations.
